My creative life began as a poet.  While teaching at the University of Hawaii I wrote Outer Islands, a collection which went on to win The Pacific Poetry Prize, the greatest honour of my life.  But in Hawaii I also discovered the hitherto unimaginable beauty of the sea.  The bold colours and patterns of the local sea life were a revelation to me.  The urge to someday become a colourful painter was born in Hanauma Bay.
